Rachel McAdams Is Back to Blonde and Scorching

1327724056 45 Rachel McAdams Is Back to Blonde and Scorching

A few years ago, when Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling were the “it” couple, co-starring in the romantic epic The Notebook, Rachel was a bombshell blonde. Since then, the Sherlock Holmes star has dabbled in many a hair color, including shiny brown, red, and even blonde waves tinged with hot pink. McAdams is a beauty whose chameleon-like appearance changes from demure to dynamite according to her latest movie role.

Her latest look is eye-popping: blonde hair and cherry red lipstick. Just check out her photo spread in the upcoming Glamour issue. She channels old Hollywood beauty in the photos, in one shot wearing red chiffon, cat-eye liquid liner, and a pretty red pout, shown here on Popoholic.

In movie roles like Morning Glory, Rachel McAdams wore a pretty chocolate brown hair color that brought out the blue in her eyes. Then she showed up in a faded blonde for Woody Allen’s film Midnight in Paris, giving another spin to her versatile looks. With a face like that, the star can pull off virtually any look.

So how does one find the right hair color? The best hair colors bring out the beauty of the skin’s complexion, minimizing flaws. For instance, some shades actually emphasize redness in skin tone or make skin appear ruddy, dull, or flat. To play with the color wheel at home first, try out a virtual hair makeover like Clairol’s Try It On Studio. Another way to find the best hair colors and styles is by experimenting with wigs. Try one on for a night, take pictures, and get opinions from friends. Last, work closely with a talented stylist who knows which tones suit the face’s natural beauty.

Miracle workers

1327722860 81 Miracle workers

ONE beauty doctor-cum-pseudo philosopher once declared, “If you’re rich and you’re ugly, that’s your fault.” To which a rival, surprisingly, agreed and decreed, “In this age of science and technology, there is no reason to be ugly.”

With advancements in the beauty industry, it’s gratifying to note that scientists still look to Mother Nature for the most effective ingredients in our unending pursuit to be beautiful.

‘Liquid gold’

ARGAN oil, the latest botanical phenomenon, is fast becoming accessible in the Philippines. Heralded as miraculous by beauty and anti-aging enthusiasts, argan oil is derived from the nuts of the Argania Spinosa tree, which grows exclusively in Morocco.

Also known as “liquid gold,” argan oil is said to be rich in vitamin E and is known as the purest antioxidant. It also contains high levels of phytotestorols, squalene, essential fatty acids and unsaturated fatty acids, which all can help restore and revitalize hair, skin and nails. Hereabouts, the company that aggressively distributes this elixir is Souq International, with its Moroccan Argan Oil. The product promises to be a multitasker—a moisturizer, anti-wrinkle agent and anti-aging miracle worker.

From head to toe, or from split-ends to in-growns, Morocan Argan Oil boasts of the following benefits: restores and rejuvenates the skin from the damaging effects of pollution, sun exposure, oxidation, tobacco, stress and other environmental factors; moisturizes dry, dull skin; softens skin and reduces fine lines and wrinkles; and reduces skin irritation and redness, especially in the treatment of acne, blemishes, eczema, psoriasis and skin asthma.

The beauty must-have is also said to make scars and keloids less noticeable; prevents stretch marks because it helps maintain skin elasticity; nourishes, strengthens and protects the hair cuticle from root to tip to prevent breakage; stimulates new hair growth; moisturizes hair, promotes shine and smoothens frizz and flyaways; and strengthens brittle nails.

TJ Sulit, president of The Souq Organics Boutique, is optimistic that organic products like Moroccan Argan Oil, though seemingly still unfamiliar to the Pinoy consumer, will be embraced in the Philippines.

“We have a huge number of very well-traveled Filipinos and a lot of Filipino expats overseas. All the organic brands that we are importing are the premier and award-winning brands from their countries of origin. Most of our well-traveled customers recognize the brands easily. With the strong presence of international magazines and the Internet, Filipinos can easily research the brands and ingredients that we are introducing,” Sulit says. He adds, “The Filipino market is also starting to be very intelligent and sophisticated in its choices of cosmetics. We all know that most of the over-the-counter commercial products only contain 2 percent to 5 percent active ingredients, the rest are combination of water and synthetic materials with harmful and carcinogenic ingredients. It’s just a matter of time before Pinoy consumers become more aware and sensitive to the harmful chemicals in the products.”

On their web site (souqinternational.com), Sulit and his partners share that during their frequent trips abroad, they became exposed to a holistic way of life. They then began looking for products that are “kinder to our body, to the community and to the environment,” which they found in organic products, “those that do not include ingredients grown or manufactured using toxic pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, synthetic growth hormones, genetically modified organisms [GMO] and artificial preservatives, colors or flavors.” Thus, Moroccan Argan Oil found its way to the Philippines.

‘Always beneficial, never artificial’

A souq, which is immensely popular in Morocco, means a “marketplace” where trading occurs. So, Souq International, true to its mission of “scouting for the best of the world’s unconventional and extraordinary products, from exotic pieces to time-tested natural beauty solutions,” adds the American Pangea Organics products to its roster.

Pangea Organics products are “formulated to amplify hydration and support cellular regeneration by feeding the skin with the highest quality antioxidant nutrients, EFA-rich oils, and nourishing plant botanicals that nature has to offer,” offers its web site pangeaorganics.com. “The idea is to nurture yourself while nourishing your skin. Pangea’s core values are based on the belief that the thing that makes a good product and a good company are one and the same: integrity—of product, performance, practices, people, planet and purpose.”

The award-winning and bestselling Pangea Organics range includes facial creams, facial toners, facial cleansers, eye cream, facial scrub, facial mask, balancing oil, bar soaps, body lotions, shower gel, body oils, hand soaps and lip balms.

Gwyneth Paltrow, Oscar winner and style icon, swears by Pangea’s potent qualities as a beauty product. Will The Souq Organics enlist the requisite local celebrity to hawk its beauty bounty?

“We are currently studying on who will be the best brand ambassador for the company, not just our argan oil line and the Pangea range but the brand as a whole,  someone who genuinely cares about people, the environment and the planet. It must be someone who advocates a healthy lifestyle,” says Sulit.

The Souq Organics Boutique will open two stores in high-end malls this 2012, but it attends most classy bazaars in the Metro.

Worcester Telegram & Gazette – telegram.com – Parents trying to kill lice more kindly

one pixel transparent Worcester Telegram & Gazette telegram.com Parents trying to kill lice more kindly

Head lice are not a health hazard, do not spread disease, and are not a sign of uncleanliness, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. In fact, lice are more attracted to clean hair. Slathering a child’s head with mayonnaise, covering it with a shower cap, and tucking them into bed for the night may sound bizarre (imagine the smell!) but some parents are turning to that, and other natural remedies for head lice infestations that are regular occurrences in schools and day care centers. Colleen R. Nigzus, school nurse for Harvard public schools, said parents in the district are trying various green or natural treatments these days, because they do not want to use standard methods, most of which contain harsh insecticides and may have health effects, especially with repeated use. “Parents are fearful of chemicals. They don’t want to put their children at risk,” she said. Besides the mayonnaise wrap, other natural methods include applying olive oil or petroleum jelly to the hair, and wrapping it for a few hours, or overnight. The theory is that those treatments smother live lice, although they don’t kill their eggs. For parents unwilling to turn their children’s heads into a sort of salade Nicoise, there are several natural lice treatment and repellent products available. Marieke Cormier, owner of Roots Natural Foods in Leominster, said she sells a lot of natural lice shampoo, especially at the beginning of each school year. Her store carries “Thursday Plantation” lice and egg removal products, most of which are made of Australian tea tree oil; a “Quit Nits” nontoxic kit, and hair gel made of salts and alcohol. Ms. Cormier said parents tell her the products do the trick. Mary C. Gallant, a nurse at the T.C. Passios Elementary School in Lunenburg, said hair products made by Fairy Tales, which contain rosemary, lavender, citronella, and an enzyme that the company claims can break down nits (lice eggs) are popular with parents. Some also resort to olive oil and Vaseline wraps, she said. “There are outbreaks every spring and every fall,” Ms. Gallant said. Ms. Nigzus said families have had luck with the natural treatments, but the School Department does not make treatment recommendations, other than advising parents to consult doctors. Infestation with head lice, officially called Pediculosis capitis, is common in the U.S. among children six to 12 years old. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, approximately 6 million to 12 million children have infestations each year. Head lice are not a health hazard, do not spread disease, and are not a sign of uncleanliness, according to the academy. In fact, lice are more attracted to clean hair, because they can attach easier to the shafts. The most common symptom is itching. They are most often diagnosed by seeing a live louse on the head, but that can be difficult since they crawl quickly. The tiny eggs, or nits, are easier to spot, especially behind the nape of the neck, behind ears, or within a centimeter of the scalp. Head lice are spread by direct contact with the head of an infected person, or, much less likely, by sharing combs, brushes or hats. Lice cannot hop or fly — they crawl. Dr. David M. Keller, a pediatrician and an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, said besides parents being wary of insecticide treatments, lice are becoming resistant to long-used over-the-counter medications such as permethrin, sold as Nix; Rid and Pronto; and lindane, a prescribed medication formerly sold as Kwell. Lindane is no longer recommended for lice treatment because possible side effects include seizures and neurological problems. “The lice are getting more and more resistant to these things, and if parents are using those hair products over and over, you wonder how effective that is,” he said. Parents, he said, may be forced to try old-fashioned home remedies if the usual methods don’t work. “Head lice — for parents today — is a challenging problem, although lice are not dangerous, health-wise. They are mostly an annoyance,” Dr. Keller said. Sometimes, he said, patients are prescribed sulfamethoxazole (an antibiotic, given orally) for lice. Heat lamps have also been tried. He acknowledged the use of mayonnaise and similar home remedies, but questioned if lice are actually smothered, or simply removed physically in the prolonged process of trying to get mayonnaise or Vaseline out of hair. “I imagine that whole process is pretty unpleasant,” he said. Hair Debate: Packaged vs. Custom Hair Weave

1327718078 85 Hair Debate: Packaged vs. Custom Hair Weave

From Black Voices — How many times have you encountered a woman with a bad hair weave? Whether it’s on the street, at work, in the club or on TV, bad hair weaves can be found everywhere these days. Not even celebrities like Beyonce or Gabrielle Union are immune to hair crimes; from choosing the wrong color to texture to not blending properly.

To put an end to hair tragedies like these, we put together a list of the top hair weave brands. Whether you prefer custom blended hair or packaged hair, there is something for everyone.

Believe it or not, there are some packaged hair brands out there that can stand up to any custom brand, and Outre is definitely one of them. Outre hair comes in dozens of textures, colors and lengths, but we suggest the Premium New Yaki Hair ($19.99,BeautyOfNewYork.com). What’s great about Outre hair is that it’s inexpensive, and unlike the lower grade packaged hair, it resembles human hair. The only downside is that Outre hair sheds quite a bit.

Rock-N-Roll Sushi

1327713247 33 Rock N Roll SushiLiving in the thriving metropolis that is Birmingham, one has a vast array of dining options. What some Birminghamians may not deign to is traveling the wearisome twenty or so minutes it takes most locals to drive out to the infamous country girl’s stomping grounds, Trussville, or Truss-Vegas as some of the natives call it. Don’t let the bad name and undistinguished palate of said country girl fool you, my dears. Having recently moved to Vegas myself…Truss-Vegas of course….I have taken fondly to the down-home charm and quaint setting of the once one horse town. Every city has its pesky varmints to deal with, some in the form of judgmental country girls, some in the form of conniving politicians, it’s all a matter of who you’re surrounding yourself with. But if you stick with ole Bunny here, and take my advice I’ll have you heading north from Birmingham proper to experience some of the finer things before you can say chopsticks. That’s right lovelies, your dear ole Bunny here reporting back about how I braved a night on the more than four horse town (I’ve counted at least five just on the road leading to my new digs) to bring you some of the best that Trussville has to offer. Now don’t let me mislead you, you may not know it but I happen to be a country girl myself. Yes, re-read that sentence, I didn’t say the country girl, I said a country girl, as in one among others. But what I am not is too humble to admit that I’m much kinder and more sophisticated than the other one.

Though our dear friend Anonymous, who will remain so for the time being, has a much more refined palate for food and beverage than myself, I can appreciate good food, wine, and ambiance wherever it may be served in the world. As you can imagine, I had to do some sweet-talking to our dear Anonymous to persuade him to let me take on the task of writing this week’s review. After stroking our dear Leo’s mane and ego a bit he agreed that since it was the column’s first trek over to T-Town….Trussville of course….that someone other than the ex-lover of a citizen of the town would be better suited to take this one. So being the impartial and utterly devoted angel that I am, I volunteered and A. agreed. So dolls, here’s what I’ve got to report.

Despite what you may have been told, Trussville isn’t all sweet tea and Momma’s home cookin’ (though I wouldn’t complain even if it were). My quaint new town happens to also be the new home of the locally owned Rock-N-Roll Sushi. Interestingly enough, the only other location is in Mobile, AL, the place I last called home, though I just experienced the fish and funk fusion for myself in Trussville on Friday last.

Our waitress (who I soon found out would be serenading the crowd the following night for some of the spots frequent live music) sat our party of six at a table for four, because we were tired of waiting and the small venue was packed. As the aptly named establishment promised, we were greeted with paintings of KISS on the walls, Nine Inch Nails jamming through the speakers, and menu’s covered in the sleeves of vinyl records. I wasn’t pleased with my record menu, STYX: The Grand Illusion, so I perused the rest of my party’s collection to trade. I decided over options such as The Eagles and Johnny Cash to take Heart from one of my companions. What can I say? Alone is my all time favorite jam, so I couldn’t sell out Ann and Nancy. I opened my worn, yet still sleek record cover to find, not Barracuda, but a better and decidedly easier digestible array of aquatic Asian cuisine. Inside the menu stays true to its rock n roll theme with “Opening Acts”, which includes the usual Japanese appetizers: edamame, squid salad, seaweed salad, and my favorite, cucumber salad with thinly sliced crabmeat atop the chopped cucumber and spring mix greens marinated in a vinegar dressing, just to name a few. I highly recommend the Beef Tataki for my carnivorous cronies out there to start with; the filet mignon was cooked to perfection! I’m getting a bit ahead of myself, I’m afraid so let me regress a bit to the true opening act and what is often my favorite part of any menu, the drink menu. Some of my motley crew went with the rock and roll version of their favorite cocktails and ordered things like the “Dirty Diana” Martini or the Purple Rain.

Something I didn’t get to experience, but am looking forward to for a little hair of the dog action one of these woozy Sunday brunch’s is the Bloody Geisha, a creative Asian take on one of my all time favorite’s the Bloody Mary with a blend of wasabi infused vodka, soy sauce, and a pinch of sriracha added to the classic Bloody Mary mix, and garnished with, you guessed it, edamame. As some of you may already know, the Bloody Geisha is not original to Rock-N-Roll Sushi, but as my boy toy would say, I like their style. While our anonymous friend is correct in pointing out that I must be watched around the Bourbon, I do like my red wine now and again….ok who am I fooling? I try to keep it my main source of antioxidants to keep this healthy, girlish glow. Bunny’s not getting any younger doll’s, and sometimes a little vino is all it takes to forget that. What can I tell you about the wine list at Rock-N-Roll Sushi?

Well, not much because their isn’t much of one. The “wine list” and I’m being very kind, is composed of four types of red and six types of white. I couldn’t tell you the brand, only the variety, as merlot, shiraz, pinot noir, etc. is as descriptive as it gets. But I can appreciate a true rock and roll lifestyle enough to know that Tommy Lee or Slash would chug back a bottle of Barefoot Moscato or a bottle of Dom Perignon without knowing or caring what the difference is, so a refined wine list is about as rock and roll as a neat and clean hotel room on check out day, I suppose. I won’t knock the joint for their less than chic wine selection, but I will give them props for allowing us to bring in ten bottles of our own wine, brought and selected by Anonymous himself, and charging a small fee for allowing us to keep the bottles on the table. At $5 a bottle, we decided to keep two at a time on the table, always a red and a white, and had a nice tasting of his Italian, Chilean, and Argentinean reserve. If you’re wondering, my fave was the 2006 Don Baltazar Petit Verdot, Argentina. I love a good red wine, and as Anonymous says, I’m a “real man” when it comes to my drinking tastes. You make me blush, sir.

Now, back to business: the food. Where was I? Ah yes, after our wine tasting and opening acts came the “Classic Rock” and “Headliners”. On the “Classic Rock” menu those of you who don’t like to mess with a good thing can find your standard sushi: the California, Rainbow, Volcano, Spider, Veggie, and Shrimp Tempura to name a few. For all my rock and roll hero’s out there you can try the “Headliner’s”, which are all creatively named after a rock band or star. You can get an Elvis Roll, Madonna Roll, M

Hair loss common in women of all ages

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

It started slowly. Karen Meyer’s already thin hair seemed to be getting more and more sparse each year. By the time she graduated high school in 1966, she knew what was happening. She was barely 18 years old, and she was going bald.

“I alternated between a hairpiece and a wig,” said Meyer, 63, of North Cumming. “Back then, it was more of a fashion trend, but I was one of the few who actually needed to wear hair.”

Women make up about 40 percent of Americans experiencing hair loss, according to data from the American Hair Loss Association, a California-based organization dedicated to educating and improving the lives of those affected by hair loss. Despite growing concern among women, hair loss is still often considered a male issue, but there are signs that women are no longer willing to suffer in silence.

Many women have taken to cyberspace, creating online communities to share their hair loss stories, treatments and other information. As a testament to the marketing potential of women with hair loss, Aveda recently introduced Invati, a line of hair care products designed to boost thinning strands.

As an adult, Meyer was diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia, also known as male or female pattern baldness. Meyer’s mother had lost all of her hair, and her brother was bald by age 21. Doctors confirm that female pattern baldness has a genetic link, but there are many other reasons that women lose their hair and many are losing it at increasingly younger ages.

“About 50 percent or more of women have some shedding by age 50,” said Dr. Ashley Curtis of Dermatology Associates of Atlanta. Medications, autoimmune disorders, pregnancy, birth control pills, menopause and stressful hair styling are just some factors that can cause hair loss in women of various ages, with the effects ranging from temporary, isolated patches of hair loss to widespread permanent balding.

In female pattern balding, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a derivative of the male hormone testosterone, binds to receptors, causing negative effects on the hair follicle that lead to thinning. The only Food and Drug Administration-approved hair loss treatment for women is a 2 percent concentration of minoxidil topically applied to the scalp.

With few treatments being tested on women, particularly women of childbearing age, it is often left to dermatologists to find the right combination of medications, some of which are prescribed off-label, to assist in managing the condition.

Dr. Melissa Babcock of Babcock Dermatology in Sandy Springs has prescribed spironolactone, a medication used to reduce blood pressure, which also slows the production of male hormones and blocks DHT from binding to receptors. Estrogen, oral contraceptives and the drug finasteride (more widely known as Propecia or Proscar) — an FDA-approved pill for male pattern baldness — also have been used to combat hair loss in women.

Other solutions include hair transplants in which a strip of hair with active follicles or individual follicles are taken from the one part of the head and transplanted to the bald areas. Natural follicle simulation is a method of tattooing the scalp to camouflage patchy hair loss. But because female pattern baldness differs from male pattern baldness in that the hair loss is diffuse, women may or may not be candidates for these treatments.

Meyer, who was not a good candidate for a hair transplant, knew given her family history there was little she could do to stop the process of losing her hair. When the former hairstylist moved to Atlanta in 1992, she decided to work in hair replacement full time. She knew how devastated a woman could feel when she was losing her hair.

“I wear my hair from the time I get up in the morning to the time I go to bed at night,” said Meyer, who has about 30 percent of her hair and wears a three-quarter prosthesis. “Even after 44 years of marriage, I don’t feel comfortable being around [my husband] without my hair.”

At New Horizons, an Alpharetta-based company that offers custom hair restoration solutions, Meyer’s youngest client is 7, and her oldest client was 93. Company owner Sharon Mason said women are more aware now than in the past that they do have options to address hair loss.

“Before, they were like, this is too silly to go to the doctor,” said Mason, who has been in the hair replacement business since 1976. “Now they go online, they see symptoms and they go to the doctor.”

When clients come to Meyer, she helps them find solutions to suit their condition and lifestyle. But fitting them for a “cranial prosthesis,” as the hair systems are called, is just part of the job, Meyer said. She also shares her story with clients in the hopes that they will be encouraged.

“We have a lot of crying and a lot of support,” she said. “I always said … I was going to do something important. That is exactly what this has been.”

Thieves seeking pricey hair extensions have struck a Gwinnett County business more than a dozen times since they opened. Channel 2′s Kerry Kavanaugh talked to the store manager, who said shoplifters are finding interesting places to hide their loot. The hair extensions can range from $20 to $200 and police said they’re a hot item for thieves. That’s why Top Beauty Supply on Grayson Highway in Lawrenceville has installed 16 security cameras. Despite that shoplifters are still costing them big. From weaves to wigs the hair industry is booming and so is the number of people trying to steal pricey extensions. “They think it’s a free for all,” store manager John Oh said. Oh said he has been struck by thieves at least 15 times in 18 months. “We have to watch everybody,” Oh said. “Boy, girl, you know grandma” Oh included “grandma” after he saw surveillance video from one robbery. He watched as a woman with a cane took a package of hair and quickly shoved it under her skirt and walk off. “I would have never suspected her as a shoplifter. I mean that’s … you see an old lady with a cane. I would try to help her,” Oh said. Another day security cameras caught a woman packing hair into her purse. Oh said they were hardest hit on Christmas Eve.

He said that night, two women came in posing as customers. Oh believes one attempted to distract the manager while the other grabbed bags of hair worth $35 each. Oh said that woman hid while she removed the hair from the packages. By the time an employee spotted the empty plastic bags the women were gone. “If somebody doesn’t get caught they’re going to do it again. So that hurts us,” Oh said. Police have issued an arrest warrant for Latonya Nelson, 18, for shoplifting but it’s unclear from the warrant the exact role she played. “Despite the shoplifting, the managers said they’re lucky they haven’t been the victim of something more violent like an armed robbery, which has been happening a lot across metro Atlanta.
